Beware of Contractor Fraud
The trying times, such as natural disasters, tend to bring the best out of people, with communities coming together to solve the complex problems together. Unfortunately, such events also expose those vulnerable to predatory actions of unsavory few, especially during the period of recovery and rebuilding.
Here are a few do's and don'ts to consider when searching for a reputable contractor:
Do:
- Ask family, friends and coworkers for recommendations
- Check the contractors credentials and references
- Get 3 written estimates from licensed and insured contractors
- Contact your insurance company if you have concerns about your contractor
Don't:
- Pay with cash or sign your claim check to a contractor
- Sign a contract with blank or incomplete sections
- Make final payments until the job is done
