Our History
1956
United States Air Force SSFCU
Initially established as the United States Air Force Security Service Federal Credit Union (USAFSSFCU), the credit union opened its doors at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas with just eight members and $25 in deposits.
Member-owned Financial Cooperative
Security Service was founded as a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative to serve the fiscal needs of the members and families of the U.S. Air Force Security Service Command.
1965
First Milestone
After only four years in operation, Security Service reached its first significant milestone with $1 million in assets.
First Building
To increase accessibility to members, Security Service moved to its first permanent building on Security Hill at Kelly Air Force Base.
1968
A Shorter Name
To simplify the credit union’s long name, the board of directors voted to shorten the name to Security Service Federal Credit Union.
1969
Unprecedented Growth
Security Service experienced remarkable growth during this time, ending the year in excess of $18 million in assets and with more than 29,000 members.
1970
Expanded Loan Growth
This was a year of phenomenal growth for Security Service, surpassing more than $100 million in loans.
1973
A Civilian Move
Security Service moved into its first off-base location at U.S. Highway 90 in San Antonio, Texas.
1977
Breaking Ground
Security Service broke ground on its very first corporate headquarters; a new five-story building that would be connected to its off-base location.
1980
First Corporate Headquarters
Security Service opened its first corporate headquarters; a new five-story building located next to its off-base location.
Colorado Merger
Security Service entered the Colorado market by merging with Fort Carson Credit Union.
1981
New Technological Upgrades
Security Service introduced its first ATM and direct wire transfer service.
1986
New Products and Services
Security Service introduced the availability of credit cards and mortgage loans for members. The credit union also established a call center with worldwide, toll-free lines for members stationed in other parts of the country and all over the world.
1996
The World Wide Web
Security Service entered the online realm with the launch of its website, SSFCU.org, creating a range of new possibilities for the credit union and its members.
Volunteer Corps
Security Service established the Volunteer Corps, an internal volunteer program for employees to provide service to local, worthwhile charitable and non-profit organizations.
1997
Online Banking
Security Service introduced its first web-based online banking initiative to members, providing access to e-statements, as well as a number of future innovations.
1999
Federal Credit Union of the Year
The National Administration of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) recognized Security Service as the Federal Credit Union of the Year.
2001
Corporate Headquarters Move
Security Service moved its corporate headquarters to a new 128,000 sq. ft. facility located on La Cantera Parkway in San Antonio, Texas.
Investment Services
The credit union established the Security Service Investment Group (SSIG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Security Service Federal Credit Union, to meet the long-term financial needs of its members.
2003
Membership Growth
Security Service celebrated its membership base reaching 500,000.
2006
SBA Preferred Lender
The Small Business Administration (SBA) designated Security Service the first credit union in San Antonio to be named an SBA Preferred Lender.
2007
Charitable Giving
The Security Service Charitable Foundation was established to assist in contributing to deserving organizations and causes that help improve the quality of life for local citizens.
2010
Utah Merger
Security Service entered the Utah market through a merger with Beehive Credit Union based in Salt Lake City.
2013
Mobile Banking
Security Service expanded its online banking with the launch of the myBranch mobile app.
2015
Security Service Insurance
The credit union launched Security Service Insurance, a full-service subsidiary offering property and casualty insurance products for homes, renters, ATVs, motorcycles and boats, as well as other policies.
2016
A New Corporate Campus
Due to extensive growth, Security Service relocated its corporate offices to a new 250,000 sq. ft. campus located at 15000 IH 10 West in San Antonio. The new campus is home to more than 700 employees and offers an operations building, amenities building and event center.
2017
Security Service Title Company
Security Service expanded its array of services to include the Security Service Title Company, a full-service subsidiary offering title insurance and settlement services for mortgages and other real estate transactions.
2019
Qualifying for Membership
Today, Security Service offers more than 2,600 ways to qualify for membership.
