Phishing

A phishing attack is an unsolicited e-mail that you may receive from what appears to be a trusted organization or an organization with which you have an established relationship. The most common types of e-mail sites used in a phishing attack belong to large financial institutions, Internet auction sites, or Internet payment processing sites, such as eBay or PayPal. The e-mail provides a false reason to induce you to provide confidential financial information, such as account and routing numbers, credit card numbers, passwords, PINs, social security numbers, date of birth, and/or other private information.

Some of the common characteristics of phishing attacks are as follows:

  • Title lines read "Official Information" or "Urgent Information for You"
  • Provide false reason to create a sense of urgency
  • Can be very convincing
  • Claim to want to validate or update your information
  • Links to a website that mimic a legitimate website by copying logos, backgrounds, fonts, etc.

What should you do if you are targeted by a phishing attack?

  • Do not reply or click on the link in the email.
  • Report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission or at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
  • Contact the source of the e-mail using a telephone number or web address that you are certain is authentic.
  • If you are concerned that you unwillingly supplied personal or financial information on your Security Service accounts, please contact us at 1-800-527-7328.
  • Links to a website that mimic a legitimate website by copying logos, backgrounds, fonts, etc.

Please note that Security Service does not initiate unsolicited e-mails, phone calls, or mailings that would request this type of personal financial information. If our members initiate contact with us, then Security Service will verify their identity using personal and financial account information.
