  • The best place to start your search is your own public library. The reference section should include books of companies and foundations offering scholarships.

Watch Out for Scams!

If you have to pay to get money, it might be a scam. Watch out for companies with official-sounding names that ask for a fee up-front. Here are some links to sites with information about these types of scams.

  • Do Your Own Homework to Avoid Scholarship Ripoffs. Excellent, informative article from the Federal Trade Commission. Some highlights: Beware of "scholarship search" services with a fee; don't give out your checking account number; if in doubt, check with the Better Business Bureau.
  • The Financial Aid Page offers complete, useful information about warning signs of a financial aid scam and much more.

The following companies have recently had charges brought against them for alleged scholarship scams:

  • Career Assistance Planning, Inc. (a.k.a. College Assistance Program, College Assistance Planning).
  • Higher Education Scholarship Program, National Health Scholarship Program, National Scholarship Program, National Management Scholarship Program.
  • Student Assistance Services, Inc. - Operates mainly through direct mail.
  • College Assistance Services, Inc. - Operates mainly through direct mail.
  • Student Aid Incorporated - Ads in college newspapers; up-front fee.
